Possession
Joywave
Wow. It's hard to believe that this album was released just before a time dominated by the pandemic. To say that this record is an accurate representation of young adult life in 2020 would be an understatement. From the discussions on media exhaustion, burnout, distractions, and the complete domination that fear has over our lives, there's just so much to unpack. Possession does not promise to have the answers to all of our challenges (and nor should it), but it does tell us to keep the perspective of it all. Not to necessarily check out, but to zoom out. However big your problems may seem to you, zoom out to the world around you and you'll see that they aren't that big at all. Not every news story is BREAKING NEWS and not every opinion is binary. I came back to this album more times than I can count in 2020 and I can honestly say that it kept me grounded when all I had was me and my own head. And this isn't even mentioning just how fantastic the whole thing sounds. There's soft balladry, earwormy and explosive melodies, and spooky instrumentals sprinkled across this whole thing that make it such a joy to listen to. Possession by Joywave really is the complete package and is deservedly my favorite album of 2020.
